Why I use 6 mm Stones instead of the larger 8 mm stones. The use of 108 of the 6 mm stones are obviously lighter. The use of the 8 mm stones wind up making the necklace much longer and, therefore, heavier. Since the 8 mm mala is longer, it is sometimes necessary for the wearer to wrap the mala twice around the wearer’s neck. With the 6 mm bead-sized mala, the length of the mala (and tassel) usually winds up around the Solar Plexus Chakra; or, at the longest, the Sacral Chakra.
What is a Mala?
Buddhist prayer beads or malas are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetitions of a buddha’s name. They are similar to other forms of prayer beads used in various world religions and therefore the term “Buddhist rosary” also appears. (Source: Wikipedia)
Why 108 Beads in a Mala?
Many reasons have been given around the number 108. Some reasons are: (a) There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and Shakti. 54 times 2 is 108; (b) There are said to be 108 energy lines to form the heart chakra. One of them, susumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to self-realization; (c) 108 – some say that 1 stands for God or Higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness and completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinite or eternity.
